When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

Another view of the right side. The neat, seamless transition between the hearth and the floor makes it look like the fireplace hearth is set on top of the wood laminate floor. This is not the case of course but it is the look we are trying to achieve.
