Undercutting Fireplace Hearths for Flooring When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

Last | Thumbnails ![]() This is a view of the right side of the fireplace hearth. As mentioned earlier, cutting the the length of the flooring to fit is less labor intensive that cutting the width. We also removed a small amount of material in the back of the hearth creating a void where the baseboard molding can be recessed into. This makes for a nice, clean look and we then use a color matched grout caulk to finish off the minor details.
