When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

Here's a closer view at a little different angle of this curved travertine fireplace hearth. This is before the grout caulk is installed between the tile and hickory engineered hardwood floor. Also notice on the left of the hearth is a section of baseboard molding that has yet to be installed. We've replaced all of the baseboard molding on this project with a one-inch taller molding that covers the existing paint line. When removing and reinstalling existing baseboard moldings on top of a new floor, usually they will be raised to a higher elevation based on the thickness of the new floor. That new elevation will also cover the existing paint line and very little touch-up will be required.
