Undercutting Fireplace Hearths for Flooring When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

You can see a narrow dark line between the wood floor and the bottom of the travertine tile riser. This will be filled with a flexible grout caulk to match the color of the existing grout used between the tiles on the hearth. If you are wondering what the funny looking green things around the edge of the floor, against the wall are, they are clamps to keep the planks tight against one-another avoiding gaps until the adhesive is cured.
