Undercutting Fireplace Hearths for Flooring
When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

The flooring planks are cut and set in dry (with no adhesive) as we make our way around the hearth with our starting plank for each row of wood flooring. Blue painter's tape is used on the flooring as an indicator of exactly how much material we'd want to have set under the tile. This allows us to have a consistent expansion space between the wood floor and the hearth's concrete sub-surface.
